BATON ROUGE METROPOLITAN AIRPORT

BATON ROUGE METROPOLITAN AIRPORT

The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) funded a major signage and drainage project to significantly enhance BTR’s appearance at its gateways and as a gateway into Baton Rouge. Dana Brown & Associates was commissioned to design, prepare construction documents, and oversee construction for the project, which includes re-naturalization of the Monte Sano Bayou to improve drainage, filter the water, and turn a mundane area in front of the airport into a park‐like setting filled with a variety of plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees amidst a beautiful gabion embankment. The adjacent pond that marks the final turn toward the airport terminal is enhanced with new, lighted 12-foot-high brushed stainless-steel letters denoting BTR. A new wayfinding system was designed and constructed, including new entrance and exit monument signs and major modifications to the overhead highway directional sign on Veterans Memorial Boulevard leading to the airport. New stainless steel signs with internal LED lights were designed and constructed throughout the airport area, as well as along Veterans, Harding, and Plank roads. These tie together the separate areas of the airport campus and strengthen the identity of BTR as a contemporary, progressive transportation hub.

Directly in front of the terminal, a two-hundred-foot long glass waterwall fountain greets arriving passengers immediately after retrieving their luggage. New crosswalks between the terminal and the parking garage were redesigned and constructed to be at the level of terminal and garage walkways, with the road sloping up to create a curbless condition that is fully ADA compliant. Pedestrians are now able to circulate more easily and safely with level surfaces and imbedded LED lights that warn drivers of the crosswalks.
