Federal City Community Forest Master Plan: Algiers, LA

Client: Algiers Development Corporation, Inc.

Summary: The community of Algiers suffered a loss of well-established trees in recent years , the bulk of which were destroyed by Gustav in 2008. The damage rendered the neighborhood with a loss of tree canopy, which has adversely affected the livability and walkability of this historic urban area of New Orleans. Federal City, located in Algiers, LA, is the largest planned redevelopment project in the state. Dana Brown & Associates, Inc. was hired to develop a Master Plan that will address forest canopy restoration, create a diverse community forest for the area that will help economically revive the neighborhood, and educate the surrounding community about urban and community forests. The Master Plan will be used as an educational resource to inform the public the proper ways to plant the right trees in the right place.
