Michoud Front Door Stormwater Management Program: New Orleans, LA

Summary: Dana Brown & Associates, Inc.* designed a sustainable stormwater management system located in the New Orleans Regional Business Park, bound by I-510 on the west, Intercostal Waterway on the south, Chef Menteur Highway on the north, and the Michoud Canal on the east. The City of New Orleans used the conceptual design calculations to apply for a Hazard Mitigation Grant and was awarded $21 million for implementation.

Services:

  • Researched the surrounding area and analyzed the site hydrology and soil types of the 7,000-acre New Orleans Regional Business Park (NORBP)
  • Calculated existing and proposed stormwater volumes based on 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 year floods for 1,700-acre core area of the NORBP
  • Designed a system to store and slow stormwater, increase water residence time, filter pollutants, and minimize the impact on downstream pump systems
  • Integrated a fully functional business park with a natural wetland habitat into a cohesive site plan to accommodate new development
  • Improved the image of the site by repairing roadways and adding high quality signage, lighting, and landscaping planting, while also using stormwater detention as an amenity for NORBP
